This article gives a summary of the computer based test delivery process for test centres and also contains two important documents, the Preparation instructions and Test day instructions.
The following tests will be delivered computer based in November 2021:
- BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT)
- Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA)
- Thinking Skills Assessment Section 1 (TSA S1) for Cambridge
- Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) for Oxford
The computer based tests will be delivered using the BTL Surpass SecureClient platform, which allows the delivery of tests even with slow or intermittent internet connections or tests can be taken entirely offline.
SecureClient also locks down the candidate's PC so that no other programs can be accessed for the duration of the test.

You will need to ensure that all computers you plan to use for the tests conform to the technical and system requirements. Webcams and microphones are not required to run the computer-based tests. To install SecureClient you must have administrator rights to each PC you want to use for the test. You may need to check whether you have this kind of permission or if you need someone else to carry out the installation for you.
We have now sent login details for the platform to all centres that made entries for computer-based tests via email from email@example.com.
Once you have logged in you are able to create additional users at your centre. Please see the attached guide for instructions.
Full instructions on how to install SecureClient can be found in the attached preparation instructions.
Depending on your security arrangements, you may need to whitelist the following URLs:
If you have used SecureClient before, you will need to update to the latest version when advised to do so, to ensure you can run our tests.
If you have agreed for candidates to bring their own laptops to take the tests, these must conform to the technical requirements. We have attached instructions for candidates downloading SecureClient to their own device, which should be given to those candidates ahead of the test day.
Downloading computer based tests
We recommend that you download tests in advance to the PCs you are using. This means the test is stored locally and you are not dependent on an internet connection when administering the tests. You will be able to view test keycodes for your entries and download the test associated with the keycode closer to the test day.
Each keycode is individual against a candidate's test. If a candidate is sitting multiple tests, please download all tests for the same candidate to the same PC where possible.
You should also print off individual key code slips for each candidate. Keycode slips are part of the invigilation pack that can be printed from SecureClient once the keycodes have been uploaded. If you have not downloaded the test in advance, candidates will be able to start their tests by entering the keycode, provided there is an internet connection.
Please see the Preparation instructions which contain detailed detailed instructions on how to access keycodes and download tests.
On test day
Please click the link to download:
Launch SecureClient on each PC by clicking the SecureClient icon on the PC desktop.
Make sure the candidate sits at the PC to which the test has been downloaded and the correct keycode slip (and CRI) has been placed on the desk.
The candidate starts the test by entering the keycode. Once the candidate has started the test, all other applications on the PC are locked and cannot be accessed.
Candidates must be invigilated as per our regulations. The SecureClient system does not record the candidate during the test and there is no remote proctoring facility.
Ending the test
When the candidate is ready to end their test, they press the Finish button and confirm they want to submit their answers.
At the end of the test, the Invigilator should check that all of the tests show the Finished symbol on the invigilation screen.
Uploading Tests from SecureClient
Once the test has been submitted by the candidate, the completed test will be automatically uploaded back into Surpass as soon as an internet connection is present. However, if a completed test does not automatically upload due to a lack of internet connection, you can relaunch SecureClient later and the system will upload any remaining tests.
